Modern mothers can thank the ancient civilisations for Mother’s Day
There’s much truth in the old adage that a mother’s work is never done – so it’s no wonder mothers look forward to Mother’s Day as the one opportunity for them to sit back and let others get on with it. And although some would claim that EVERY day should be Mother’s Day, the occasion is a wonderful opportunity to acknowledge and appreciate mothers in a special way.
But let’s take a look past the commercialism and see where the tradition has its roots.
Mother’s Day wasn’t created by a greeting card company as a strategy to boost sales, as some people believe. It is believed to have its roots in ancient times when goddesses were revered in festivals and holidays. In ancient Greece, Rome and Egypt, festivals were held to revere goddesses including Isis, Cybele (a great mother of Greek gods) and Rhea.
Dedicated Mothering Sunday dates also appear in the liturgical calendars of several Christian denominations, including Anglicans. One school of thought puts the origins of ‘Mothering Sunday’ in the 17th Century when church going people were expected to visit their home or ‘mother’ church every year. And because many of the poor children, who had been sent away to work as servants, were only able to see their mothers during this annual visit, it became a very poignant time. These children also presented their mothers with flowers they had picked as well as special baked ‘mothering’ cakes. These acts of giving are very much in vogue today, with flowers being one of the most popular ways of showing appreciation.
Catholics also had the fourth Sunday in the 40 day Lenten period as the day when the Virgin Mary, mother of Jesus, was revered.Over this time, mothers were given a break from their traditionally ‘female’ jobs such as cleaning and cooking as other family members took over.
The story of Mother’s Day in the US is said to have begun with the story of Julia Ward Howe, a writer and activist who campaigned energetically for the cause of Mother’s Day.The second Sunday in May being declared Mother’s Day has its origins in the early 1900s when the state of West Virginia declared it a holiday following the efforts of another Mother’s day campaigner, Anna Jarvis (her own mother died on that date). At her mother’s funeral, she gave funeral goers white carnations – which were her mother’s favourite – and so they’ve become popular over that time.
People from all over the world celebrate Mother’s Day in some form or other. And across all the different countries and cultures, there’s a common thread running through them that mothers are given gifts and flowers as a token of love and appreciation.
Billions of dollars are spent on Mother’s Day gifts and flowers around the world, with some of the most popular being pamper treatments, flower arrangements and chocolates. And mums aren’t the only the ones smiling on Mother’s Day. Nearly eight percent of the annual revenue of the US jewellery industry is generated over the holiday, and it’s the most popular day for restaurant dining in the US.
Many florists, including Perth florist, Airport Florist, say the day is one of the busiest on their calendar as appreciation for mothers is recognized with a gift of flowers.Florists aren’t the only busy ones – restaurants, postal services, retailers and spas – are all frantic over the Mother’s Day holiday – all keeping busy so that mothers can be spoilt rotten and given a chance to relax!
